The Technical and Vocational Education and Training Council, through WorldSkills Barbados, is happy to announce that the 2021 WorldSkills Barbados Juniors Future Skills Camp was a resounding success!

The five-day camp, which was geared at students ages 14 to 18, took place online September 6th - 10th via ZOOM Cloud Meetings and offered five distinct future skills: 3D Digital Game Art, Aerial Robotics (Drone Operating), Building Information Modelling (BIM), Mobile Applications Development, and the Internet of Things.

Training, which was delivered by international experts, exposed approximately 100 students to new aspects of future skills. Participants in the Building Information Modelling skill learned about the construction industry using the Autodesk Revit software to create a 3D model of town houses from a 2D architectural drawing. While students enrolled in Mobile Applications Development, created an educational math game for young children using the Android Studio software.

Ariadne John, a student who took part in the 3D Digital Game Art skill, described her experience at the Future Skills Camp as exciting and beneficial. “I enjoyed the camp because it actually helped me a lot with texturing and I learned more things than when I first started. It will also help me with some future projects that I would like to start,” she said.

Technical Officer with the TVET Council and Lead Officer of the WorldSkills Barbados (WSB) Programme, Dario Walcott, explained why a camp like Future Skills is so important at this time: “The high demand for the WSBJ Future Skills Camp is evidence that our young people are hungry for new knowledge and skills. With the recent reduced movement due to COVID and increased online presence, we find that more people have become interested in digital skills, and to this end we have already had inquiries about next year.” (PR/TVET Council Barbados)
