Beauty Therapy students of the Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology put their skills to the test during the preliminaries of the WorldSkills Barbados 2018 competition

The preliminaries of the WorldSkills Barbados 2018 Competition will conclude today as scores of tertiary level students compete to secure their spot in the finals.

Competitors hoping for a chance to be crowned national champion in their respective skill areas have to demonstrate that they can meet the WorldSkills standard.

They are also vying for a chance to represent Barbados at WorldSkills Kazan 2019, the international competition which will be held in Russia, or the regional competition, WorldSkills Americas which will be hosted jointly by Chile, Costa Rica and Peru in October.

This year, the preliminaries of the local biennial competition have seen an increase in the number of participating private and public Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions as well as the skill areas being offered.

This will make it harder for competitors as only the top four students in each skill area, in addition to a reserve, will advance to the finals which will be held at BMEX from May 18 to 21.

Competitors who make it to the finals will undergo a training and development programme designed to improve not only their technical and vocational skills but also their critical thinking, public speaking and other soft skills.

The number of skill areas being offered at the preliminaries of the island’s largest technical and vocational skills competition has doubled.

In addition to the four skill areas of Automobile Technology, Cooking, Fashion Technology and Hairdressing offered in 2016, the WorldSkills Barbados 2018 preliminaries, which commenced February 5, also saw students competing in Beauty Therapy, Restaurant Service, Graphic Design Technology and Car Painting.

The participating TVET institutions in the 2018 competition are the Barbados Community College, the Barbados Vocational Training Board, the Career Development Institute, Nikita’s School of Cosmetology, Caribbean Cosmetology Academy and the Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology.

WorldSkills Barbados is organised by the TVET Council.  It is a competition which promotes skills development and excellence amongst students between the ages of 16-21 years who are enrolled in TVET institutions.

The first WorldSkills Barbados competition was held in 2012.  At that time only three TVET institutions participated: the Barbados Community College, Barbados Vocational Training Board and the then Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic.

Last year, Barbados took a team comprising the 2016 WorldSkills Barbados gold medallists to compete in the international competition, WorldSkills Abu Dhabi 2017 which took place in the United Arab Emirates.  Barbados did not medal at that event.  (PR/TVET Council Barbados)
